The film was originally released uncut for cinema and video, but when the video was submitted for censorship in 1987 - following the introduction of the VRA - the BBFC was only prepared to pass the US R-rated edition (censored to curtail some of the bloodier highlights). The distributors subsequently claimed the film was being released 'uncut' - technically true, but completely misleading. The uncensored version was finally restored for video in 2003.
Followed by: Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981, Jul/1981), Friday the 13th Part III (1982, May/1983), Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984, Jun/1984), Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985, Aug/1985), Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI (1986, Apr/1988), Friday the 13th Part VII - The New Blood (1987), Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989), Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993), Jason X (2000, Aug/2002), Freddy vs. Jason (2003, Nov/2003).
